The execution just falls flat on its face. She could have Gemma experiencing love, loss, betrayal and jealousy - all very powerful and complicated emotions. There’s this complex and interesting idea of the soul and emotions tied together, and that being the very essence of a human being is something that she could explore. I felt that Sorensen could potentially delve into exactly what Gemma‘s feeling and how she feels it. Also, having a character suddenly able to feel emotions is an interesting idea. This star can save the world, and that’s an intriguing premise and a fun one that can really draw a reader in. The idea of a fallen star isn’t original, but the turn that she’s given it is. Jessica Sorensen, author of The Fallen Star She has Vampires, Keepers, Fallen Angels, Fallen Stars, Foreseers, Witches, Death Walkers, the works, and she’s allowed herself plenty to mine from. As only part one of the series, there’s obviously a lot of depth and complexity that she can explore. The world that Sorensen has created, along with the characters and the systems of magic that she’s placed in the world, are intriguing. What this story does have going for it though is potential. This book should have gone through another copy-edit before it was published. The only things that bring the prose down are its cheesiness and the numerous spelling and grammatical errors. It’s a fast read and won’t bog you down too much. She doesn’t add superfluous or cumbersome words in her prose, and for the most part, it’s rarely clunky. To begin with, Sorensen does have a very easy-to-read writing style. Now, I had my problems with the book, but we’ll start with the positives first. Way more concrete and way more interesting to read, no? (The book won’t tell you why.) There are evil monsters, known as Death Walkers, out to get her because she’s the one who will be able to save the world. (No spoilers though, I promise.) Gemma‘s a fallen star (the book won’t tell you how) and she suddenly starts feeling emotions one day. Now, the above-blurb is pretty vague about the entire story and doesn’t adequately describe what it’s really about. The Fallen Staris the first in a young-adult paranormal trilogy by indie author, Jessica Sorensen.

And as her world falls apart, figuring out the secrets of her past becomes a matter of life and death. Things that shouldn’t be real suddenly seem to exist. But with Alex seeming to hate her and secrets popping up everywhere, Gemma’s life is turning into a chaotic mess.

Not to mention the monsters that haunt her nightmares have crossed over into real-life. And when she’s around Alex, the gorgeous new guy at school, she can feel electricity that makes her skin buzz. Up until recently, she has been incapable of feeling emotion. For eighteen year-old Gemma, life has never been normal.
